All Saints Community Food Initiative - Making a Difference
Building on the success of our 2012 food collection for a Glasgow foodbank, the Social Sciences department within All Saints launched a new 2013 appeal throughout the month of October. In total over 1450 non-perishable items were donated.
Pupils explored the issue of poverty in Social Sciences & RE lessons as well as part of the Whole School Tutor programme. Pupils in Drama produced a DVD entitled "On the Breadline" which explored the need/growth for food banks across the city. Pupils in Media filmed short adverts to encourage pupils/staff to get involved in donating. Business Education pupils designed posters/leaflets to be distributed in the local community & to our partner agencies. Computing pupils collated & updated information for the school website and twitter. Pupils in S1 maths were involved in counting & sorting collected items.
Throughout the collection many pupils asked if the food would be going to LOCAL people (within school catchment area). They also highlighted the elderly & young children as being two of the most vulnerable groups in society and the winter months (Dec-Feb) being particularly difficult as a result of individuals/families rising fuel bills etc.
Fuelled by the enthusiasm, energy, motivation & drive of our young people the idea of an All Saints Community Food initiative took shape.
